Statement by David Clohessy of St. Louis, director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those abused by Priests (314 566 9790[email protected])

Does 15 years in prison for ex-Subway pitchman Jared Fogle seem harsh? If so, consider this: “police say they reviewed nearly 160,000 text messages, more than 27,000 emails, and tens of thousands of videos and images.” Judge Tanya Walton Pratt is right: “The level of perversion and lawlessness exhibited by Mr. Fogle is extreme.”

We’re glad for this sentence. We’re also glad that Fogle has voluntarily paid some damages to his victims and wish more predators would do this.

But we’re especially glad that, for years, he won’t have the chance to hurt any more kids. And we’re grateful that his courageous victims cooperated with law enforcement.

We suspect there are others who were assaulted by Fogle who are still trapped in shame, silence, confusion and self-blame. We hope they summon the strength to step forward, get help, expose wrongdoers and start healing.

Finally, we’re struck by lawyers who claim the predators they represent “have already lost it all” and should thus get leniency in court. What a disingenuous claim. How spouses, friends, employers and others treat a predator has no bearing on how predators should be dealt with in court.

"I want to redeem my life," Fogle, his voice cracking with emotion as he wiped his eyes, told an Indianapolis courtroom during his sentencing.

Fogle was sentenced to 188 months each after pleading guilty to one count of traveling to engage in sexual conduct with a minor and one count of receiving child pornography. He will serve . . .
