MO--Church should do more re youth minister caught with child porn

For immediate release: Thursday, Jan. 29

Statement by Barbara Dorris of St. Louis, Outreach Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314-503-0003, [email protected])

Members and staff of a St. Peter’s church must aggressively reach out to others with information about a youth minister who was sentenced yesterday on child porn charges.

Raymond William Schneider, formerly of Church on the Rock in St. Peters, had 14,000 child porn images. He’ll purportedly spent 14 years behind bars. But he may have hurt other kids and church officials have a moral and civic duty to try to find and help them.

Too often, when predators are charged, convicted or jailed, church officials who hired them do nothing. That’s irresponsible. We urge Church on the Rock staff and members to remember Jesus’ parable of the lost sheep. We beg them to use their resources to track down former church members who may have seen, suspected or suffered Schneider’s crimes.

And we hope that every single person with information or suspicions about Schneider will call law enforcement immediately.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We were founded in 1988 and have more than 20,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. I like this post.
Barbara is absolutely right when she says church officials have a moral and civic duty to try and find & help kids who may have been hurt by their clergy.
Barbara is also right when she says people with information or suspicions about Schneider should call law enforcement immediately. Contact the police, not church officials. The police are the professionals when it comes to law enforcement and they are independent.
