Maine victims’ advocate hit with church subpoena; SNAP responds
We’re sad that another Catholic institution is harassing a brave advocate for victims. Jesuits should be ashamed of themselves for the entire Doug Perlitz scandal, which they are now making even worse by legally attacking a caring individual who has done much to expose Perlitz’ crimes and help Perlitz’ victims.
We hope these hardball moves backfire, and prompt even more people who see, suspect and suffer clergy sex crimes and cover ups into stepping forward. Some will no doubt be more frightened. But some, we are confident, will be outraged enough to overcome their fears and speak out, exposing corruption and protecting kids.
50 State AG Call for Grand Jury
Any investigation must be:
- independent of and separate from the church
- must have subpoena powers and ability to compel testimony under oath
Anything short of these criteria is a sham and whitewash.
In addition, write letters to the editor, make phone calls to politicians as they can apply pressure to keep them responsive to our demand. We need to make efforts to ensure that they follow up on what the state is doing to investigate these crimes.
The Attorneys General of forty states have inquired about the grand jury process in Pennsylvania. Let's get statewide investigations going in fifty states.
