Ex NJ Catholic cleric suspended; SNAP responds
A former Morristown Catholic cleric has been suspended from his post in Virginia because of allegations of sexual misconduct in New Jersey.
We’re sad that New Jersey Catholic officials are being silent about these accusations. For the last decade, the church hierarchy has repeatedly promised to be “open” about clergy sex cases. But they continue being secretive, speaking up only when forced to do so. Such secrecy only makes the vulnerable more vulnerable and the wounded more wounded.
We hope anyone who saw, suspected or suffered misdeeds by Travers or any cleric will stepping forward, get help, call police, protect others and start healing.
50 State AG Call for Grand Jury
Any investigation must be:
- independent of and separate from the church
- must have subpoena powers and ability to compel testimony under oath
Anything short of these criteria is a sham and whitewash.
In addition, write letters to the editor, make phone calls to politicians as they can apply pressure to keep them responsive to our demand. We need to make efforts to ensure that they follow up on what the state is doing to investigate these crimes.
