Statement by Barbara Dorris of St. Louis, Outreach Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314-862-7688 home, 314-503-0003 cell, [email protected])

A Mormon leader testified under oath in Utah that he married several underage girls. We are glad that this testimony is not only public, but can be used in court against this man.

Winston Blackmore came to Utah from Canada to be deposed in an unrelated property suit. He admitted that several of his "wives" were under the age of 16 when he married them. According to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, US law and Canadian law it is illegal to marry someone who is under the age of 16. That is child abuse.

We hope Utah and British Columbia officials will seriously investigate these crimes and if possible arrest and prosecute Blackmore. We hope anyone who was married before the age of consent will read this and know their rights and get help.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 25 years and have more than 15,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Our website is SNAPnetwork.org)

Dalana…I totally agree with you. Children and teens need to be protected from pedophiles like Blackmore.

j hope they raise the age at 18 or 19 even 21 because its child abuse to marry at 17 years too bacause they have no say they are just teens and they are unprotected

Winston Blackmore is NOT a Mormon leader. He is not even a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (known as the Mormons). Blackmore is a polygamist. Anyone practicing polygamy is excommunicated from the “Mormon” Church. Please get your facts straight before publishing something like this. It is poor journalism and takes away from your ability to be effective.
