SNAP Press Statement

Statement Regarding Partial Release of
Orange Cty. Diocese Records

May 17, 2005

Statement by Mary Grant of Long Beach
(626 419 2930), Western Regional Director of SNAP. She was molested repeatedly by Orange County priest Fr. John Lenihan.

"We must remember that this information is being made public only because brave and persistent victims patiently sought justice in the courts. Sadly, that seems to be the only way long-held secrets about clergy sex crimes ever see the light of day. All of us are indebted to these courageous victims. Children will be safer because of their dedication.

We believe this information will prevent at least one of these dangerous clerics from gaining more access to vulnerable youngsters.

Only the most naive believe these files are complete.

We hope Bishop Brown will discipline the eight other priests of his diocese who are still fighting to keep their crimes hidden and delay healing for victims and Catholics. And we hope Cardinal Mahony will start to finally come clean about sexually abusive clerics and complicit church officials in his archdiocese."
