Statement Regarding Levada Post at Vatican

May 11, 2005

Statement by David Clohessy, SNAP Nat'l. Director

We're very disappointed that San Francisco Archbishop William Levada is under consideration for the head of CDF.

In the San Francisco archdiocese, Levada has been slow to act, harsh to victims and committed to secrecy regarding abuse.

A therapist who headed his review board quit in protest, essentially saying church investigations of molestation amounted to a PR sham.

He has allowed credibly accused priests to remain in ministry even after

His lawyer has negotiated deals with local district attorneys that help keep abuses cases quiet.

If Levada is chosen for this post, it will be an insensitive and unwise decision.
