Statement Regarding
Vatican Elevation of Ohio Priest

By Stuart Dupras
Head of the Dayton chapter of SNAP

Sept 1, 2003

We agree with the Dayton chapter of Voice of the Faithful, that:

- Monsignor Daniel Pater be immediately barred from any active ministry in the archdiocese, and

- Bishop Pilarczyk immediately begin the process of defrocking him.

But we also believe the bishop should:

- publicly apologize to Pater's victim for allowing a known sex offender to leave the country, be promoted, and have access to children in other parts of the world;

- publicly provide a full accounting and explanation of this horrible scandal to Catholics in the Cincinnati archdiocese.

Our hearts go out to the young woman whose faith and trust was violated by Pater's criminal actions, and who has been further victimized by the callousness and recklessness of bishops Harvey and Pilarczyk. We are grateful for her courage in reporting her abuse and in seeking justice. We hope church officials will take long overdue action to protect other children from Msgr. Pater and that such action will help bring healing to this victim.

Our deepest thanks go to Msgr. Breslin for his persistent efforts to protect vulnerable children by warning Vatican officials of Pater's crimes. We appreciate his integrity, and for setting the example for others priests to follow.
