SNAP Statement Regarding
Cardinal Egan's Snub of Keating Commission

January 18, 2003

Statement by David Cerulli of New York
Coordinator of New York SNAP

"The National Review Board is composed of highly respected and accomplished Catholic laypeople who are volunteering their time and expertise to help make the church a safer place. Sadly, they are being treated with the same arrogance and insensitivity that many abuse victims experience in the Archdiocese of New York and have experienced in the Bridgeport Diocese.

If Cardinal Egan's hubris is typical of America's bishops, the Review Board faces an uphill struggle in getting to the full truth of the abuse crisis.

It seems that the Cardinal is more concerned with preserving his perceived authority and independence than with keeping children safe," said Cerulli.
