As Secular Media Exposes More Information about Former Cardinal McCarrick, the Absence of the Vatican Report is Even More Glaring
Yet another story has come out detailing financial misdeeds and abuse cover-ups perpetrated by disgraced Cardinal Theodore McCarrick and his enablers. As secular media continues to release updates and information to the world, the Vatican continues to drag its feet on releasing its own report on the McCarrick scandal.
Pope Francis first commissioned a “thorough study” into the McCarrick scandal in October of 2019. It has been almost a year and we have heard barely a peep out of the Vatican. Some have speculated that the delay is to wait out the clock on civil windows in New York and New Jersey, others think that the delay is because the report is simply embarrassing to many in the Catholic Church who witnessed Cardinal McCarrick’s rise while having heard rumors about his behavior. It is also possible, given the high rank the former cardinal enjoyed and for just how long he was able to use his position to prey on the vulnerable, that the report is simply taking much longer to complete than anticipated.
Regardless of the reason, the Vatican must release the report – or at least a preliminary version of it – now. More important than the report, Pope Francis must detail the significant and substantive changes he will make as a result of this investigation. It is clear that much and more went wrong in the Catholic Church to allow a prolific abuser like Cardinal McCarrick to become so powerful, and the Vatican must reckon with that publicly and must do so soon.
