For immediate release: Tuesday, October 07, 2014

Statement by Barbara Dorris of St. Louis, Outreach Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 503 0003 cell, [email protected])

Authorities say that they are investigating at least 17 Puerto Rico priests for alleged child sex crimes. We hope anyone who has suffered child sexual abuse by Catholic priests in Puerto Rico finds the courage to speak up.

The now defrocked priest, Edwin Mercado Viera, plead guilty to molesting a 13 year old altar boy. We are grateful to the brave victim who spoke up and to the brave victims of the other 17 priests being investigated in Puerto Rico.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 25 years and have more than 20,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Our website is SNAPnetwork.org)
