For immediate release: Monday, Sept. 21

Statement by David Clohessy of St. Louis, director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those abused by Priests (314 566

Fr. Joseph Maurizio stood trial for seven days in federal court for sex tourism.  He was found guilty of five counts, including molesting children and pornography.  He was also found guilty of transferring money outside the US for sex.  Maurizio traveled a orphanage in Honduras frequently.

We are pleased that the two victims of Fr Joseph Maurizio have been granted a sense of validation and justice. They are to be commended for their courage in speaking up and taking action to hold him accountable for his crimes.

He was found guilty of giving money and candy for sex and photos.  He was originally charged with eight criminal counts of sex tourism involved the sexual abuse of children and using charity money for his trips abroad.

Presently Maurizio is suspended from his parish ministry.  We call on the Bishop to notify his present parish and all parishes that Maurizio served of the verdict and reach out to other possible victims.

Hopefully Maurizio will be put behind bars and kept far away from kids for a long time. And if any others have been harmed by him, we urge them to come forward, get help, and contact law enforcement.
