PA--Penn State officials plead guilty

For immediate release Monday, March 13, 2017

Statement by Barbara Dorris, SNAP, 314-503-0003 [email protected]

Tom Curley and Gary Schultz both plead guilty to mishandling child sex allegations against Jerry Sandusky. We hope this brings some comfort to those abused by Sandusky. Many times children are needlessly placed at risk not just because they happen to be near a predator but because adults who knew or should have known the danger failed to act.

In cases like this we need to ask ourselves how much did school officials know? How did they react? In this case it appears they knew enough to have taken action and yet they chose to do nothing. We hope they receive the maximum penalty to send a strong message that protecting children is everyone’s responsibility.

Penn State-what a contrast to the Roman Catholic church. Molester Sandusky went to prison. Penn State eventually held people accountable and they were gone. On the other hand, the diocese of Altoona-Johnstown (which includes Penn State) had over fifty Sanduskys and not a single one went to prison. Neither were any of their enablers removed from church office or held accountable. Never thought that I would see the day when a football team and a secular institution were more just and righteous than The Roman Catholic Church.
