We applaud James Vivenzio for exposing dangerous hazing at Penn State.

We’ve long charged that much of the school’s response to the Jerry Sandusky scandal is smoke and mirrors. This new case confirms our worst fears – that Penn State officials still deal with violence and abuse poorly.

It’s ever easy to disclose one’s victimization and it’s especially hard for a young person to do this. So we admire Mr. Vivenzio and hope his courage will prompt others who were hurt in similarly reckless and cruel “ceremonies” and “traditions” to step up, get help, expose misdeeds and deter crimes and cover ups.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. SNAP was founded in 1988 and has more than 20,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers.
