OH--FACT SHEET: Accused Catholic sex offender clerics linked to The Josephinum in Columbus

(Partial list)   February 2016

Father George Broussard - Broussard attended Pontifical College Josephinum in the late 1950s and early '60s. Sued 2003. Accused of sexual abuse of 3 brothers over a 4 yr period. One plaintiff signed affidavit that his father met with Cardinal Bernard Law, then Vicar General of Diocese, in 1973 to report the abuse but Law did nothing. In 6/02 deposition in another case Law admitted that he failed to keep Broussard, his friend and classmate at seminary, away from children after being warned that he was molesting children. Suit settled 3/06

Father James S. Dabruzzi - Dabruzzi was ordained May 30, 1953, at Pontifical College Josephinum.  In 2005, he was forbidden by the Superior diocesan bishop to celebrate mass publicly for alleged inappropriate behavior involving women parishioners.

Father David Heimann - Heimann attended high school at the Josephinum from 1946 to 1950, college from 1950 to 1954 and the School of Theology from 1954 to 1958. After his 1958 ordination, he taught at the school until May 1961. (That’s the same year the now-disgraced Cardinal Bernard Law of Boston graduated from this seminary.)

Fr. Heimann was dismissed when he was found to be running a sex ring with high school boys. He had people take off their clothes and look at their bodies in mirrors, to tell them how good their bodies were and that Jesus loved them and their bodies.

Father Phillip Jacobs - Jacobs was vice rector in the College of Liberal Arts at the Pontifical College Josephinum. He was removed from ministry in Columbus OH diocese in 1993 after reports that he had sexually abused as many as 10 children. He was sent to treatment, after which he went to work as a priest in the Victoria diocese in Vancouver, British Columbia. He was removed from ministry there in 2002 after news of the abuse allegations in Ohio came to light. He subsequently is said to have worked in a "non-church" job in Europe. Jacobs was arrested in 2010 as he disembarked from a plane in Victoria, BC. He was charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, and sexual exploitation involving children under the age of 14. He was found guilty at trial in 2013 and in later that year he was sentenced to two years of probation along with a five-month conditional sentence. He was also required to register as a sex offender.

Father Raymond E. Lavelle - Spiritual Director, Pontifical College Josephinum, Columbus (1969-1970). Lavelle retired in 2000. In 2013, the Diocese of Columbus announced a credible allegation of abuse that he had abused a minor between 1971 and 1980. He worked at multiple parishes and schools during his career. Review board found allegation credible and warranted further investigation.

Archbishop Robert Fortune Sanchez - Sanchez served on several boards and committees, including the Pontifical College Josephinum. Sanchez resigned in 1993 after three women accused him of being sexually involved with them in the 1970s and early 1980s when they were teenagers. Appointed Archbishop of Santa Fe in 1974, Sanchez was ultimately accused of having sexual intercourse with at least 11 women over a period of many years. Some of the women were teenagers. One claimed to have been paid $25K after Sanchez allegedly raped her in 1973. Sanchez also had extensive knowledge of the sexual abuse by priests in the Archdiocese and rarely did anything to punish or remove them. He resigned in 1993 and lived in Minnesota. He died 2012.

Unnamed Seminarian - During Cardinal Law's tenure at the Josephinum, a seminarian asked what was the average size of a penis. He took a dozen freshmen and sophomores into a shower and measured them. One seminarian confessed it, which ended up getting the classmate expelled."

Unnamed Seminarian - In a 2015 news article, the vice rector of Josephinum told a seminarian that he'd discovered a "credible accusation of homosexual activity" against the seminarian. The man was expelled, and later sued the seminary.
