For immediate release: Friday, March 4, 2016
Statement by David Clohessy of St. Louis, Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 566 9790, 314 645 5915 home, [email protected])
For the second time this week, we call on Columbus Bishop Frederick Campbell to spread the word about a local Catholic.
One is a teacher (Brian Sze) who admitted to sexually assaulting a teenager and pleaded guilty, today, to producing child pornography. The other is a priest (Msgr. Harold J. Burkhardt) who was “outed” in a just-released grand jury report.
Psychology, history and common sense all suggest that both likely hurt other kids. Common decency suggests that Campbell and his staff should use pulpit announcements, church bulletins, diocesan websites and school mailing lists to seek out and help others who may still be suffering in silence, shame and secrecy.
In weeks, Sze will be sentenced. It’s crucial that the judge knows as much about Sze as possible so an appropriate penalty can be assessed.
If you saw, suspected or suffered child sex crimes or cover ups by either predator, we beg you: Protect kids by calling police, not church officials. Start healing by calling therapists, not church officials. Get unbiased guidance by contacting independent sources, not church officials. Expose wrongdoers by calling journalists, not church officials.
(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. SNAP was founded in 1988 and has more than 20,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Our website is SNAPnetwork.org)

A former central Ohio teacher who admitted to sexually assaulting a 15-year-old student has pleaded guilty to one count of producing child pornography.
According to a federal criminal complaint released in October, former Bishop Watterson music teacher Brian Sze admitted to having sexual contact with a 15-year-old student on approximately 15 occasions.
Investigators say a search of electronics seized from Sze's home also turned up . . .
