NM--Victims blast NM medical board over Dr. Driskill

For immediate release: Thursday, Dec. 11

Statement by Barbara Dorris of St. Louis, Outreach Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 503 0003, [email protected])

The New Mexico Medical Board are mischaracterizing and minimizing the alleged misdeeds of Dr. Christopher S. Driskill. It describes him as reportedly having “sexual relationships” with patients. That’s wrong. He’s accused of sexually exploited patients. This isn’t hair-splitting. It’s an important distinction.

Because of the power difference, patients can’t genuinely consent to sexual contact with their physician. That’s why in virtually every state it’s a crime for doctors to have any kind of sex with patients.

Shame on the Board for using such inaccurate and language. Calling exploitation a “relationship” is part of a tragic but deeply-rooted “blame the victim” mentality that’s all too prevalent in our society when it comes to sexual misconduct and crimes.

We applaud every person who has reported potential or actual crimes or misdeeds by Driskill. We hope that everyone who may have information or suspicions about him will call police or prosecutors promptly. And we hope the Board will apologize to Driskill’s accusers and use more honest language in the future.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We were founded in 1988 and have more than 20,000 members.
