MO--Three new stories show women sometimes abuse too

For immediate release: Wednesday, Aug. 26

Statement by Barbara Dorris of St. Louis, Outreach Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 503 0003, [email protected])

A woman in St. Louis is charged with sexually abusing an infant. A woman from Park Hills is charged with promoting under-aged prostitution. A woman in New York is charged with promoting prostitution through a website called RentBoy.com

Today, these three stories appear in just two news sources: the Post-Dispatch and the New York Times.

The lesson: women and men both commit and conceal sex crimes, even child sex crimes. It’s not enough for parents to tell innocent kids and vulnerable adults “Be careful around men.”

Obviously, the vast majority of sex offenders are men. And they sometimes coerce women in to exploiting other women or girls.

But if the vulnerable are to be safer, we as a society must wrap our minds around the sad and disturbing reality that both genders molest, rape, and assault innocent people - male and female teachers, priests and nuns, etc.

We applaud law enforcement for pursuing each of these cases. We hope these cases will prompt other victims to step forward, help police, expose wrongdoers, protect others and start healing.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. SNAP was founded in 1988 and has more than 20,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Our website is SNAPnetwork.org)
