MN- Children’s pastor arrested for soliciting a minor, victims respond

For immediate release: Monday, March 31, 2014

Statement by David Clohessy of St. Louis, Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 566 9790, [email protected])

A Minnesota children’s pastor has been arrested for allegedly soliciting a minor. We are extremely concerned that a man entrusted by his community to lead children in their faith has been arrested for allegedly sexually soliciting a child.

Matthew Boos was the youth pastor of River Valley Church in Savage, MN. He had access to hundreds of children for years. The head pastor of River Valley insisted that the minor Boos solicited was not a member of that church. Research shows that the average predator has dozens of victims. We fear others may be trapped in silence, shame and self blame.

We hope that this was an isolated incidence and we hope that River Valley Church officials will do all they can to ensure that no other children have been harmed. Anyone who saw, suspects or suffered child sexual crimes should immediately call police.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 25 years and have more than 15,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. I will assure you my child did not go to this church but was contacted by him through her step sister who did attend this church. There are many more victims, and no one has come forward. I saw pictures of many girls from that church on his fake account that he confirms what he did with. its disgusting and I cannot believe more parents have not come forth.

As disturbing as this is, and it is heinous, parents need to ensure the safety of their children with any adult. Trust is earned, yet it must be verified when it comes to our children. We can’t take the view, as our parents once did, that the clergy are the one or two steps away from Christ Himself, and that they are benevolent forces in a child’s life. They are servants of the laity. Moreover, many have mental health problems and addiction problems due to the very lonely nature of their ‘calling.’ It is sad that we cannot trust our pastors. Gone are the days when families could claim their own priest by having them to holiday dinners and other family affairs. Perhaps those days placed our loved ones in harms way, as a perpetrator lulled a family into a false sense of security while assaulting its children. I will never leave my child vulnerable to any adult, and that includes clergy.
