Statement by David Clohessy of St. Louis, director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those abused by Priests (314 566 9790, [email protected])

There's just one way to see if this new agreement between St. Paul's prosecutor and Catholic officials is good: time. It will be years or months before we can tell if this deal is workable and worthwhile.

It's premature to judge this deal now. It's crucial that Choi enforces it rigorously.

Years ago, the New Hampshire attorney general made a strong-sounding deal with Catholic officials there. But before the ink was dry, the church hierarchy was dissembling and backpedaling. Despite solid work by prosecutors, the results were somewhat disappointing because sharp lawyering and determined undermining by bishops succeeded in weakening  outside oversight. We hope that doesn't happen here.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. SNAP was founded in 1988 and has more than 20,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Our website is SNAPnetwork.org)
