Maine Priest Accused of Abusing a Young Girl in the 1980s

Fr. Robert Vaillancourt, currently the pastor of St Brendan the Navigator Parish (Our Lady of Good Hope Church, Camden; St. Bernard Church, Rockland; St. Francis of Assisi Church, Belfast; St. Mary of the Isles Churches on Islesboro, Vinalhaven, and North Haven) has been placed on temporary leave by the Diocese of Portland.

We believe in the victim and commend them for their courage to come forward. We also find it very disturbing that immediately in the announcement of Vaillancourt's removal, the diocesan Communication office used the word 'temporary’ along with administrative leave and not a word of support for the victim who came forward.  Any investigation into an accusation of sexual abuse of minors, whether it occurred recently or 50 years ago, is a complex process for victims. To us, the announcement made by the Diocese of Portland demonstrates the minimizing tactics utilized by Roman Catholic Dioceses globally.

We stand with the victim and hope that anyone who has information relating to Vaillancourt or other abuse will first come forward to law enforcement.
