Just Sued Priest Still on the Job in Detroit

A priest who is currently listed as a professor at a Detroit seminary was sued last week for alleged child sex crimes. For the safety of children, we call on Michigan church officials to immediately suspend the cleric.

Fr. John M. McDermott is currently a theology professor at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, Michigan. Last week a lawsuit was filed which accused him of sexually abusing a child before he became a priest in 1967 in the Diocese of Brooklyn. He belongs to a religious order known as the Jesuits.

We call on Archbishop Allen Vigneron and Jesuit officials to disclose this allegation against Fr. McDermott and promptly send him to a facility away from the Sacred Heart campus where he can be monitored.

We also beg anyone who may have seen, suspected or suffered crimes or misdeeds by Fr. McDermott to call independent sources of help, like police, prosecutors, therapists and to make a report to A.G. Dana Nessel's ongoing investigation into clergy sexual abuse in Michigan.
