ITALY - Powerful but complicit cardinal to lead prayer tomorrow, SNAP says

We are disappointed that Cardinal Angelo Sodano is leading prayer todmorrow. Given how integral he has been to the cover-up of crimes against children, especially those of Fr. Marcial Maciel Degollado, we feel that he should step aside and let another prelate take his place.

Sodano’s horrific record on child abuse is a stain on the church, and such a public role for him only reminds us – and Catholics across the globe – how clergy sex crimes have been woefully mishandled clergy sex crimes by church officials at all levels.

Imagine the hope many Catholics would feel if other church officials found the strength to challenge Sodano and persuaded him to step aside. We hope at least a handful of prelates will make an effort to do this.

By the way, I am amazed at how “polite” you can be in your written criticisim. I would not be able to contain my feelings to the word “disappointed”. This is more than disappointment. This is anger. Justified and needed, anger, writ large as I can:

I not only hope, but I pray, that other church officials find the strength to challenge Sodano, and ask him to leave, even if he has already lead the prayer today. I am sorry that you no longer believe in the power of prayer, because it is almost all I have left to me of my faith. I stopped going to mass, because I could not in good conscience continue to show support for a church that not only condones but, enables such heinous crimes against humanity. That is what I consider their acts. Heinous crimes against humanity. REMEMBER: Christ’s words in MATTHEW 18:6, MARK 9:42 and LUKE 17:2. It would be better if those who have been posting signs around the vatican who have a priest they want to see elected pope, were rather, posting signs around the vatican that show these scriptures, printed large; for all news media to see and report.
