Ireland- Prolific predator released from prison, SNAP responds

Statement by Joelle Casteix, Southern California Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (949-322-7434, [email protected])

One of the most dangerous predator priests in history has been released from prison early. We are deeply upset about his release and hope Catholic officials will do all they can to alert unsuspecting parents that he is free.

Oliver O’Grady abused boys and girls in California for years and was sent to jail in Ireland for child porn charges. We had hoped he would be behind bars for the rest of his life.

We urge Irish Catholic employees to use every means possible to warn families about this man and to widely circulate his photo so that parents can keep their kids away from him.

And we urge Irish citizens to demand answers from penal authorities about why they gave this serial child molester special treatment and enabled him to evade journalists as he left prison. The public is owed an apology and an explanation for this callous move.

Like a bad penny he always turns up, and like the poor he will always be with us. At least he unintentionally foils or embarrasses the Church whenever he appears in a movie or TV show.

Thank you, for posting this. I read the Irish Daily Star article (from the link you included) and was surprised to learn two things: first, that although he confessed to his crimes, he was only sentenced to 3 years in prison; and, secondly I learned of a documentary that was made about him (“starring” him), in which it is made very clear that he himself said, he would never change and would always be a pedophile predator. From reading the article, it sounded like that documentary was made before he was convicted this last time. In fact, the movie was how people in Amsterdam recognized him and why he had to flee that country back to Ireland. I’m wondering if the court in Ireland hadn’t had access to the film about him? It seems that if they had, perhaps they would have sentenced him to life in prison, knowing that he (as, I believe, most pedophiles) cannot be “rehabilitated”.
