IL- SNAP responds to Chicago predator priests’ records

For immediate release: Thursday, Nov. 6 2014

Statement by David Clohessy of St. Louis, Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 566 9790[email protected][email protected])

Every time clergy sex crimes and cover ups are discussed, kids are safer. But for an institution to hide these records for decades or years – leaving police, prosecutors, parents, parishioners and the public in the dark, and leaving kids in harms’ way – is stunningly irresponsible.

This information could and should have been revealed years ago. Lives could have been saved. Crimes could have been prevented. Families could have been preserved.  Instead, Cardinal Francis George and dozens of his clerical colleagues have, for years, opted to put their reputations and comfort

It’s as if Catholic officials thought, for years, that “Our job is to protect ourselves from lawsuits. So we’ll yank these dangerous men from parishes. But that’s all we’ll do. And whoever they molest next, that’s not our concern.”

Today’s belated, grudging and partial disclosure should be seen in this context.

Church officials harp on healing. But healing is secondary. Prevention is primary. Yet Catholic officials never talk about prevention. They want us to believe that all of this is “in the past.” It’s not.

Of these 36 men, 21 who are too dangerous to have in Catholic parishes now live among unsuspecting neighbors. Some of them babysat kids last night or tutored kids this morning or will coach kids this afternoon.

But Catholic officials are apparently content with this. Otherwise, they would release the addresses of these men, provide their photos and beg victims, witnesses and whistleblowers to call police and prosecutors.

But they’d rather lull us all into believing the threat has passed. It hasn’t.

The issue now is what will Cupich and George do about these 21 living offenders: Richard B. Bartz, Leonard A. Bogdan, Daniel P. Buck, John W. Calicott, Walter G. DeRoeck, James V. Flosi, Robert D. Friese, Jesus P. Garza, John E. Hefferan, James Hoder, Michael J. Hogan, Walter E. Huppenbauer, Robert L. Kealy, John J. Keehan, John J. Keough, William L. Lupo, Robert J. McDonald, Peter J. McNamara, Gary M. Miller, James M. Ray, John A. Robinson, and John F. Rohrich.

So we now do what George should have done ages ago: We beg anyone with information or suspicions about any child molesting Chicago cleric – alive or deceased, archdiocesan or religious order, proven, admitted or credibly accused – to call police, prosecutors, therapists or independent groups like ours, so that kids might be safer and wrongdoers might be exposed and criminals might be punished.

And we beg Chicago Catholics and citizens to rea these records, stay vigilant, and recognize that centuries-old patterns of secrecy and selfishness change very slowly and only with outside pressure.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 25 years and have more than 20,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Our website is

Sandy Stilling Seehausen is correct about Daniel McCormack. I’ve just googled his name and there are many news stories about him but his name doesn’t appear on the archdiocese’s list. Also I’ve just watched the news video by Barbara Blaine of SNAP and she says according to there are about 140 pedophile roman catholic priests in the Chicago archdiocese. When is the Roman Catholic System going to release all the names of all their pedophile priests?
I don’t agree with John Duffin, God IS great. It’s the Roman Catholic System that IS NOT great. The Roman Catholic System does not represent God.

There are glaring inaccuracies in the Daily Herald’s editorial today. It seems they buy the"spin (I .e half truths / lies) of the archdiocese of Chicago . I am furious. The least the media can and should do is challenge them. There can’t be one person who does not know of the Daniel McCormack case which is still before the court! He abused long after 1992 and was put back as pastor at St. Agatha’s parish where he abused boys again. I do hope all who read this editorial note in the third last paragraph it clearly states"by the church’s account" they have taken clergy abuse “seriously” and that “cases of abuse ended more than a decade ago”.

The Jesuit who sexually abused me was my student advisor. My therapist helped me connect my subconscious and conscience minds to connect. I described the priest’s office which was also his bedroom. My therapist took down 8 pages of notes. The jesuit’s name was Fr. Donald J. O’Shaufghnessy S.J.

Peter Bowman was pastor of St. James in Arl. Hts. where my family worshipped and where our four children attended all eight years of grammar school. He was on a previous list released in 2002 but not with all these details. Makes me sick!

Why doesn’t the Chicago Archdiocese release the names of abusive high school priests? What are they afraid is going to happen- more lawsuits?

David’s point is clear and direct.
    So are the church’s actions.
They will never change. Can your actions change? For the betterment of humanity and child safety?
Please, for the sake of humanity, walk away from this evil that is the catholic church.
They will never change. Any finical support given to this evil organization will use it to continue it’s immoral practices while using blackmail and bribery.
I was a latin-mass going catholic for over a half of a century. I questioned my beliefs. I listened to what it’s critics had to say.
Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, and Christopher Hitchens.
Listen to their arguments with an open mind.
For the sake of humanity, I walked away.
Christopher Hitchens was right. ‘God Is NOT Great’.
