IL--Hastert victim sues; Victims respond
For immediate release: Tuesday, April 26, 2016
Someone will get more than $1 million: either Dennis Hastert or one of his victims. We hope it will be the man who was sexually abused as a youngster by Hastert.
Every nickel taken from Hastert will deter others who try to conceal child sex crimes.
Hastert made a deal. He should honor his word.
We hope this Hastert victim will share any money he gets from his suit with other Hastert victims who weren't strong enough to personally confront their perpetrator and get a similar agreement.
But private agreements like this are less likely when lawmakers reform predator-friendly statutes of limitations and enable child sex abuse victims to expose wrongdoers in court.
No matter what a judge does or doesn’t do with this lawsuit, we urge every single person who saw, suspected or suffered child sex crimes and cover ups to protect kids by calling police, get help by calling therapists, expose wrongdoers by calling law enforcement, get justice by calling attorneys, and be comforted by calling support groups like ours. This is how kids will be safer, adults will recover, criminals will be prosecuted, cover ups will be deterred and the truth will surface.
(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. SNAP was founded in 1988 and has more than 20,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Our website is SNAPnetwork.org)
