Statement by Barbara Dorris of St. Louis, Outreach Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 862 7688 home, 314 503 0003 cell, [email protected])

The system did NOT work. Gen. Sinclair deserved jail time. Since when does paying money get a predator “off the hook” for sex crimes?

This was no “affair.” An underling, especially in a rigid, male-dominated institution like the military, and especially in combat settings, cannot genuinely consent to sex with a powerful superior.

This was a horrific betrayal and abuse of trust and power. And this sentence is a disgrace.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 25 years and have more than 15,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Our website is SNAPnetwork.org)

I agree with you, completely. It’s hard not to get discouraged by ALL of the financial “settlements” in the myriad sexual abuse cases, particularly because I know the victims need and can well use the money, but being paid it in lieu of having the perpetrator jailed, is as I said, discouraging and further depressing.
