April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month - Here are a few ways to get invovlved

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and this year we are leading a couple of great events that we want you to be involved in. Read on for more information and how you can help us recognize survivors during Sexual Assault Awareness Month:

Empowering Survivors through our Survivor Speak Out

This April, we are again partnering with our friends at The Army of Survivors to hold a Survivor Speak Out. This event will be held virtually on April 13 from 4 to 6 PM ET.

At this event, we will have an opportunity for approximately 10 people to share their stories and experiences and welcome all survivors of sexual abuse as well as allies, advocates, friends, and family.

Here's how you can get involved:

Please register to join us, even if you don't want to speak, and be there to support the survivors who are speaking out. If you know a survivor you think might want to share their story, please share the registration info with them.

Reclaiming Easter with our Survivor Easter Egg Hunt

In Pennsylvania, we're piloting an event that we hope you will be interested in launching in your own area or will join us by getting involved on social media.

SNAP leaders in Pennsylvania are partnering with a local non-profit called Empowered to Thrive in order to host a Survivor-Centered Easter Egg Hunt. Along with the goodies that usually are in Easter Egg hunts, eggs will also feature inspirational quotes and "survivor's wisdom" for the lucky finders. The message is to #ReclaimEaster in a way that survivors are not triggered, kids can enjoy safely, and the work of the organizations involved is shared within the community setting.

Here's how you can get involved:

  1. Look into hosting your own Easter Egg hunt in your community with your local survivor group. We can help provide messaging, ideas, and funding to secure an event location or materials.
  2. Share the message of #ReclaimEaster on social media. Decorate an egg with a survivor-focused theme or message and share the picture and your wish for survivors on your favorite social media account. Include the hashtag #ReclaimEaster so that we can see all the pictures in one place!
  3. Example:

If you are interested in participating in the event, either in person or through social media and you’d like to talk over your idea, connect with SNAP Communications Manager Mike McDonnell.

We also recognize that leaders might be working with other local organizations to recognize April, so if you have any events or ideas that you're focusing on locally, please let us know so we can signal boost your efforts!

If you have any questions, please let us know by emailing Zach and Mike. Thank you for everything you do for survivors and thank you for helping us recognize April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month!
