With Larry Nassar Sentenced, Focus Is on What Michigan State Knew

Michigan State University was propelled on Thursday to the center of the sexual abuse scandal involving Dr. Lawrence G. Nassar, as state and federal agencies mounted investigations demanding to know what the college knew of his behavior and when.

Neither the sentencing of Dr. Nassar on Wednesday to 40 to 175 years in prison, nor the resignation of the university president a few hours later, quelled the furor. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said on Thursday that her department would investigate Michigan State’s role, while state legislators asked that the university provide unredacted records of its investigations of Dr. Nassar and threatened to issue subpoenas if the school did not swiftly comply.

Politicians and other state officials are now scrambling to play point the finger. That’s all they are good for-after the fact-‘investigations’ to CYA. Nassar was brought to justice by the unrelenting work of the survivors; that the way it will always be. Don’t expect anybody to protect you or your children-not the schools, not the church, not the government. I wonder-no-I don’t wonder-I know. If Nasser had been a Roman Catholic priest or a brother in a robe, he would have went scot free, because he would have had the power, money and influence of the Roman church to keep him out of prison. Nassar messed up-he should have been a priest or brother. The diocese of Altoona-Johnstown had an athletic trainer who molested hundreds of young people and nobody was ever held accountable.

2023 has been a long year with many ups and downs for us all. As we close out the year, we at SNAP hope that you are feeling like you are on your way to being healthy, fulfilled, and happy. At SNAP we are proud to have hosted a very well-attended conference in August 2023. This event allowed us to gather friends, survivors, advocates, and allies for a weekend of camaraderie and connection. We were so happy to be able to welcome many first-time attendees to gather in person and are already looking forward to the next conference.

To strengthen our movement for justice, healing, and prevention, SNAP will be expanding our peer support and providing more volunteer opportunities in the coming year. Through this great work, we are ensuring survivor voices are represented as we work for significant change that will benefit children and survivors.

Right now, survivors worldwide are getting the help they need from SNAP, and more and more reach out to us daily, but we need your help to keep those programs going and get our volunteers the training they need to thrive.
