Statement by David Clohessy of St. Louis, Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 566 9790, [email protected])

A Washington woman who was repeatedly raped as a child by her stepfather will receive 3 million because of recklessness by state officials. We are glad that she sought justice for such egregious wrongdoing and hope the perpetrator soon faces criminal charges too.

Children who experience horrific violence should at the very least be protected by a government organization whose sole purpose is to protect children. The CPS was given abundant information demonstrating that this girl, who first became pregnant by her mother’s then boyfriend at age 12, was being abused. Yet it apparently did nothing.

We are horrified that this happened. We hope this victim is able to now get the healing she deserves. We hope this court action will prevent other children from continuing to suffer abuse. And we hope that the state of Washington will start doing more to protect children and prevent abuse.

One way they could do this is by eliminating the archaic statute of limitations for child sex crimes.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 25 years and have more than 15,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Our website is SNAPnetwork.org)
