WA--Victims blast Seattle archbishop

Victims blast Seattle archbishop

They say his predator list is incomplete

Support group names four more abusers

All of them are publicly accused molesters

WHAT

Holding signs and childhood photos at a news conference, clergy sex abuse victims and their supporters will urge Seattle’s archbishop to

--explain why at least four credibly accused child molesting clerics are not on his recently-released predator priests list,

--release secret files about predator priests so parishioners can learn which church staff ignored or concealed these crimes,

--post predators' names (priests,  nuns, seminarians & all church staff) in parish bulletins too, and

--include their photos, work histories and whereabouts,

WHEN

Tuesday, Jan. 26 at 1:30 p.m.

WHERE

On the sidewalk outside St. James Cathedral, 804 9th Ave. in Seattle, WA

WHO

Three-five adults who were sexually abused as children who are members of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAPnetwork.org), the nation’s largest support group for people who have been sexually abused in religious or institutional settings.

WHY

SNAP has found four proven, admitted or credibly accused Catholic clerics who worked in the Seattle archdiocese but are not included on the recently-released list of such clerics provided by church officials.

Of the four, two worked at O’Dea High School and belong to a Catholic religious order known as the Christian Brothers. They include

--Brother Karl Walczak who was “outed” as an accused child molester by his church supervisors in 2012, according to the Seattle Times, and

--Brother Douglas Zlatis who was accused of child sex crimes in Hawaii and taught at O’Dea (from roughly 1988-1992) after spending time at a church-run center for pedophile priests called the Servants of the Paracletes.http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/azcentral/obituary.aspx?n=doug-zlatis&pid=136893319

In 1990 he was the principal and oversaw the track team at O’Dea.

Two other clerics are Jesuits who worked in the Seattle archdiocese at Manresa Hall in Port Townsend in the 1960s.

--Fr. James E. Jacobson who admitted, in 2007, to fathering four children, to sexual involvement with seven Alaskan village women and to visiting prostitutes. He is accused of raping a 16 year old and is believed to be living in Spokane. He was in the Seattle area from 1960-1961 and is a Seattle native.

--Fr. Francis “Frank” W. Callan was in the archdiocese from 1960 to 1962 and was transferred often to churches in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Arizona. Callan's  name was included in 2011 on a list of Jesuits identified as perpetrators of sexual abuse. The Jesuit Oregon Province agreed to make the list public as part of their bankruptcy reorganization plan. Details of accusations against Callan were not provided. http://www.bishopaccountability.org/assign/Callan_Francis_W_sj.htm

(Jacobson was ordained in 1959 and died last year. Callan was ordained in 1960 and died in 1991. Jacobson's photo is here: http://www.bishopaccountability.org/assign/Jacobson_James_E_sj.htm

Earlier this week, retired police officer and abuse survivor Steve O’Connor disclosed that his perpetrator, former St. Benedict School teacher Dan Adamson, was left of Archbishop Peter Sartain’s predator list.http://kuow.org/post/survivor-why-isnt-my-abuser-seattle-archdioceses-list

SNAP suspects there are dozens more child predators who have worked or who work in the Seattle area whose crimes and identities remain hidden. The group believes child molesting lay Catholic employees (nuns, seminarians, brothers, bishops etc.), not just priests, should be posted as well. And SNAP wants church-goers to push bishops to post these names on parish websites, not just the archdiocesan website.

More than two dozen prelates have posted predators’ names. http://www.bishop-accountability.org/AtAGlance/lists.htm

According to BishopAccountability.org (an independent on-line archive of the church abuse and cover up crisis), the publicly accused child molesting clerics in the Seattle archdiocese are: Gary C. Ashwell, Englebert M. Axer, Edmund J. Boyle, Brother Casale, Dennis Champagne, Michael J. Cody, Paul Joseph Conn, Patrick J. Conway, John Cornelius, Edward C. (Chris) Courtney, Brother Croke, Duffy (First name unknown), George Dwyer, Leonard Feeney, James H. David Jaeger, G.A. Kealy, Dennis W. Kemp, James Knelleken, J.B. Lackie, David Anthony Linehan, John (Jack) Marsh, James McGreal, Patrick Desmond McMahon, James Mitchell, Gerald Moffat, Dennis F. Muehe, O’ Donahue (first name unknown), Patrick G. O’Neill, Brother O’Sullivan (first name unknown), Michael C. O’Brien, Harold (Harry) F. Quigg, Edward Receconi, Robert Renggli, Brother (C.P.?) Ryan, James (?) Toner, (First name unknown), Warren.

According to BishopAccountability.org  , only three Seattle area clerics have been criminally convicted of child sex crimes: Fr. Edmund J. Boyle (in 1987) and Fr. Paul Joseph Conn (in 1988) and Fr. Edward C. (Chris) Courtney (in 1988).
