Statement by David Clohessy of St. Louis, director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 566 9790, [email protected])

A Victoria man, who was a volunteer at a church youth program, has been arrested for allegedly soliciting a girl online. We are grateful this predator has been arrested and to the brave mother who alerted police.

Stephen Paul Crofutt was with Parkway Church. According to the church, Crofutt had been removed prior to his arrested due to suspicions that he was abusing a minor. Church officials have been unclear about when they knew about the alleged abuse and if/when they reported what they knew.

It is always deeply upsetting when a trusted individual betrays that trust and harms an innocent child. We want Parkway Church officials to publicly reveal what they knew and when regarding Crofutt’s alleged crimes and aggressively reach out to anyone else who may have been hurt.

Children are only kept safe when adults who know about, suspect, or suffered abuse speak up promptly and report to law enforcement.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 25 years and have more than 15,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Our website is SNAPnetwork.org)
