Polygamist guilty; SNAP responds

Statement by Joelle Casteix of Newport Beach CA, western regional director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (949 322 7434, jcasteix@gmail.com)

This is a victory for common sense, common decency and children's safety.

We commend the jurors for declaring the guilty verdict for finding FDLS leader Warren Jeffs guilty. We’re especially glad they were not swayed by his self-serving claim of ‘religious freedom.

He’s guilty of sexually abusing innocent children. That’s an act. He’s free to believe anything he likes. He’s not free to do anything he likes.

No one can be above the law, even those who cloak themselves in some kind of self-professed “faith.”

It is clear that Jeffs has done much harm to many. We hope he will be kept far away from innocent kids and vulnerable adults for the rest of his life. We hopeful these children will be able to get help and healing for the harm that was done to them.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 23 years and have more than 10,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers.
