SNAP blasts O'Malley for "cruel and reckless delay"
Statement by David Clohessy of St. Louis, Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 566 9790, SNAPclohessy@aol.com)
We applaud BishopAccountability.org for releasing this internal archdiocesan memo with names of accused priests. This independent research group has done more than all of America’s bishops combined to warn the public about proven, admitted and credibly accused child molesting clerics.
At the same time, we continue to be stunned at the on-going disparity between what Cardinal O’Malley says and does. He’s masterful at grand gestures that make some adults temporarily feel good. He’s recalcitrant at real action that makes many children substantially safer.
Every day that O’Malley keeps hiding the names of credibly accused child molesters, he enables them to intimidate victims, threaten witnesses, discredit whistleblowers, destroy evidence, fabricate alibis and, worst of all, possibly assault other children.
Every day he timidly or callously delays, he’s postponing a crucial and healing moment for perhaps hundreds of deeply wounded and still suffering abuse victims.
Every day he waits, he’s protecting dozens of powerful, popular wrongdoers instead of protecting hundreds of innocent, vulnerable kids.
He’s had more than 2,500 days as head of the Boston Archdiocese. It’s long past time for him to show courage and compassion and publicly identify all of the proven, admitted and credibly accused child molesting clerics.
(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 22 years and have more than 10,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Our website is SNAPnetwork.org)
