SNAP comments on new Boston bishops
Statement by Barbara Dorris, outreach director of SNAP, Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314-503-0003)
We're disappointed by the Pope's promotion of two priests - Fr.. Arthur L. Kennedy and Fr. Peter J. Uglietto - to auxiliary bishops in Boston.
The Pope has a simple choice: promote priests from dioceses that have more widely-documented abuse and cover ups, or from dioceses with less widely documented abuse and cover ups. He's made the more disturbing choice.
Both of these new bishops are long time clerics in a very troubled archdiocese with some 220 accused predator priests and an extensive history of ignoring and concealing child sex crimes. Given these facts, it's extraordinarily unlikely that neither of these new bishops knew anything about abuse reports, or acted responsibly when they did. It's hard to believe they acted openly and prudently about pedophile priests, or knew nothing about pedophile priests.
We see no evidence that either of them, at any point in their careers, objected to or deviated from the deeply-ingrained recklessness and secrecy of Boston Catholic officials.
This is especially true since both priests have worked at seminaries, where so much abuse has happened. And this is especially true of Fr. Uglietto, who twice worked in a parish with accused child molesting clerics.
It's clear that Boston Catholics should now be even more vigilant than ever regarding the safety of kids.
(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 22 years and have more than 9,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers.
