Chicago archdiocese discloses legal fees; SNAP responds

Statement by Barbara Blaine of Chicago, national president of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (312-399-4747)

The Chicago archdiocese is disclosing how much money it spends on high priced defense lawyers to fight deeply wounded clergy sex abuse victims in court. We think it’s tragic that church officials try to exploit every legal technicality and loophole to keep clergy sex crimes covered up and escape responsibility for predatory priests, nuns, seminarians and archdiocesan staff. If catholic officials acted more like compassionate shepherds and less like cold hearted CEOs, the archdiocese would save hundreds of thousands of dollars on legal fees.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the nation’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We’ve been around for 22 years and have more than 9,000 members across the country. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Our website is SNAPnetwork.org)
