Statement by SNAP regarding priest who molested teen returning

Statement by Barbara Blaine of Chicago, national president member of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (312-399-4747)

This is stunning recklessness and deceit by Cardinal George. He's essentially thumbing his nose at parents, victims, children, and the 'zero tolerance' policy adopted by America's bishops five years ago.

Hiding and tolerating pedophile priests in Chicago is bad enough. But importing pedophile priests from elsewhere, especially secretly, is even worse.

It's absurd and insulting that George can't find a qualified lay person or non-pedophile priest anywhere in the country to fill this role.

Whether Martin comes to Chicago seven times or 70 times is irrelevant. George is gambling with kids' lives. He's also rubbing salt into already deep and still fresh wounds of Chicago Catholics who are still reeling from his dangerous deception and callousness with Fr. McCormack, Fr. Bennett, Fr. McGuire, and so many other predators.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the nation's oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We've been around for 17 years and have more than 8,000 members across the country. Despite the word "priest" in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Our website is SNAPnetwork.org)
