SNAP Press Statement

September 3, 2008

Predatory Baptist preacher, was sentenced to ten years today in Stafford, Virginia

Statement by Becky Ianni, Virginia SNAP director, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (703-801-6044 cell)

The Honorable Gordon Willis sentenced Reverend George Lowe to 5 years in prison for each of two counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor. Half of the sentence for each conviction was suspended leaving Lowe with a sentence of 5 years in prison with 10 years of probation.

The judge by imposing this sentence has helped the victim to find justice and healing, has protected other children in Virginia from abuse and has sent a message to other perpetrators that using a position of power to harm the innocent and vulnerable will not be tolerated in Virginia.

We hope that with George Lowe in prison that anyone who saw suspected or suffered Lowe’s crimes will come forward, call the police and get help.
