Clergy sex abuse group responds to new allegations against Mark Foley's perpetrator

Statement by Peter Isely of Milwaukee, national board member of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (414-429-7259)

We ache for this brave victim and are grateful he has found the strength to come forward now. We hope his courage will prompt others who were molested and are suffering in silence, shame and self-blame to repor the crimes and get help.

We again beg the US Attorney in Miami, along with law enforcement authorities in the towns where Mercieca worked, to aggressively prod anyone with information about Mercieca's crimes to contact the police. We also again beg Miami Catholic officials to work harder to find and help other Mercieca victims.

As a society, we can be passive and complacent now, reckelessly assuming that somehow Mercieca has been magically 'cured,' that children in Malta are safe, and that charges won't be brought against him. Or we can be aggressive and compassionate, and do all we can to help heal the wounded and protect the vulnerable.
