SNAP Press Statement

Statement In Response To "Security Upgrades" In Archdiocese of Chicago

September 25, 2006

Statement by Barbara Blaine of Chicago, (312-399-4747)

"At best, this is a long-overdue short-term fix. The real solution is two-fold: first, church officials must disclose fully and promptly to law enforcement what they know of these crimes, so that molesters can be investigated by police and charged by prosecutors, instead of shielded by their Catholic peers. Second, lawmakers must reform Illinois' unfair and archaic statute of limitations so that these sex offenders can be tried and perhaps jailed.

It's a tragedy that even these piecemeal, common sense steps are being taken only because of public pressure and only after the devastating crimes of Fr. McCormack and continued secrecy of Cardinal George have been exposed."
