SNAP Press Statement

Statement on Adult Victims of Clergy Abuse

August 21, 2006

Statement by Barbara Dorris of SNAP, 314 862 7688

We praise the victim who had the strength to report this abuse and wisdom to call the police, not church officials.

Historically, the Catholic hierarchy minimizes sex crimes against people who are "technically" adults. But we in SNAP are hearing more and more from those who were assaulted, manipulated and abused around or beyond the legal age of majority. In fact, we believe that it takes as much or more courage to come forward when one was hurt as an 'adult," and of course we in SNAP welcome and support such victims.

It's sometimes illegal and always hurtful when Catholic priests force themselves sexually on anyone.

We hope that anyone who saw or suspected sexual misconduct by these two priests will be brave and do what's right: call law enforcement.
