Regarding Jury Decision Today in Catholic Sex Abuse Trial

Piscitelli awarded $650,000

Jury by a 9-3 majority finds Salesians and Fr. Steve Whelan liable on all counts

A jury found for sex abuse survivor Joey Piscitelli in his case against a Catholic religious order called the Salesians of Don Bosco.

We're very proud of Joey’s strength and courage. It takes tremendous bravery to expose predatory clergy and pursue justice in the courts. Kids are safer because Joey stuck his neck out and persevered in the face of brutal church defense lawyers.

We hope this decision will help other victims, especially those who are still suffering in shame and self blame, to come forward, warn others about their predators, and get the help and healing they need and deserve.

Although the money awarded Joey is significant, what is more significant is that he withstood the intense pressure of a team of expensive lawyers to expose the systemic cover up of sex abuse against him and other children. The message to other survivors is that courts and juries will hear and respond to the truth.

When victims speak up, at least there's a chance for healing and prevention. When victims stay silent, the vulnerable remain at risk and the wounded remain in pain.
