SNAP Press Statement

Statement Regarding Indianapolis Priest,
Fr. Harry Monroe

January 30, 2006

Statement by Barbara Blaine of Chicago,
SNAP Founder 312 399 4747

"A month ago, we stood here asking for the Archbishop's help. We want to find and help anyone who was molested by Fr. Harry Monroe.

The archbishop has chosen NOT to help. He's chosen to not respond to us. He's chosen silence over speaking up, passivity over outreach, timidity over courage, cold-heartedness over compassion.

In spite of the archbishop's failure to act, at least four hurting but brave men have come forward, exposed Monroe, warned families about him and hopefully protected kids from him. We are grateful for their courage.

Archbishop Buechlein, actions speak louder than words. In your words, you claim you've changed. But in your actions, you clearly have not. You insist on following the callous, failed practices of the past ' sitting idly by while wounded men and women who were sexually violated suffer in shame and self-blame.

Our support group has two simple goals ' to heal the wounded and protect the vulnerable. We'll keep doing this with or without the archbishop's cooperation.

But again we call on Archbishop Buechlein to do what Christ taught ' to reach out to the wounded, lost sheep, so that they can be comforted.

That's what he should do. That's what we've been doing. That's what we'll keep doing.

And again we call on Archbishop Buechlein to do what any responsible leader would do ' try find out and disclose where Monroe is now, so that others can be spared horrific pain.

That's what he should do. That's what we've been doing. That's what we'll keep doing."
