SNAP Press Statement

Statement Regarding Chicago Priest Daniel McCormack Charged with Abuse

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 24, 2006

Statement by Mike Fenske of Oak Park
Local Leader Chicago SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests

"For seven months, dozens of innocent kids were at risk of being molested because Catholic officials continue to value their reputations over their flock.

Why in God's name wouldn't Cardinal George err on the side of children's safety? After all the scandal and pain and shame Chicago Catholics have had to endure, why does he continue to side with his employees over our children?

Almost four years ago, under intense public criticism, bishops pledged to remove accused abusive priests quickly and openly. Cardinal George has violated both of those promises.

Catholic officials seem to conveniently but tragically overlook one simple fact: that it's easier for one powerful adult to repair his reputation than it is for dozens of innocent kids to repair their devastated lives and hearts."
