STATEMENT BY SNAP PRESIDENT & FOUNDER BARBARA BLAINE OF CHICAGO:

"This is the bishops' own voluntary self-survey, so we suspect these numbers are low. It's not a study or investigation, merely a survey of the same men who have hidden these crimes from the public for decades. Common sense and prudence dictate that we assume these figures are incomplete.

Some will be shocked by these numbers, but we hope that they move beyond revulsion into action. We hope Catholics will continue being skeptical of what their bishops claim regarding abuse, and will continue pushing for genuine reform, both inside and outside the church.

We hope that no one retreats into hopelessness. Hopelessness never saved one child. Only continued vigilance protects children."
