SNAP blasts symposium in Rome as “window dressing”

How many meetings will it take for Rome to learn that child sex abuse is a crime, predators must be made public and jailed, and church officials who cover up for molesters must be held accountable?

But even after years of promises, meetings, and empty apologies, the Vatican cannot do the simplest, cheapest, and most child-friendly action possible: make public decades of secret files on clergy sex offenders and enablers.

This week in Rome, Catholic bishops and religious superiors from around the world are meeting for the Vatican-sponsored “Towards Healing and Renewal” conference.  The four day symposium is being billed as a “global initiative on safeguarding children and vulnerable adults”.

Conference leaders say that the purpose of this event is to create guidelines on how to handle reports of childhood sexual abuse. Who will be leading the discussion? The very same “experts” and church officials who bear responsibility for the continued global cover-up of clergy child sex crimes, including Cardinal William Levada, who covered up criminal reports of child rape and sexual assault when he was archbishop of San Francisco, California and Portland, Oregon.

True change and child protection comes through accountability from secular authorities. Until we have that, we must see Rome’s meeting for exactly what it is: cheap window dressing.

If the Vatican was serious about protecting and safeguarding children Pope Benedict XVI would order Cardinal Levada and other church officials to turn over the thousands of pages of evidence of sex crimes they have in their possession to the International Criminal Court for investigation and prosecution.

Then again, the vast majority of mammogram patients are “only” women, anyway. They would betray the women and the children yet again to avoid accountability. Perpetrators are always ready to accept any cost for perfidy as long as the victim is paying it. You’re right; that branch of the apostolic succession has defiled itself beyond any credibility in this world or any other world.

I am sure the Catholic church will find a way under the scope of (religious freedem) to do whatever they please. IMHO, since they do not pay taxes, the CRCC has no right to any interference in the Health Care system in the US or anywhere else. The church has placed itself in the position in which it finds itself, they need to sort it out using common sense, justice and truth instead of their bully pulpit.

Now that Susan G. Komen Foundation leaders have revised their grant exclusion criteria to specify those under CRIMINAL investigation, what position will they assume if/when the ICC proceeds with an international criminal investigation against Pope Benedict, Cardinal Lavada, and the Vatican? How would the Catholic church argue against suspending SGK Foundation grants, if any, to clinics and/or research projects under the aegis of Catholic health care providers and at Catholic research universities? How would the church inveigh credibly against providing health insurance coverage for contraceptives and other reproductive health care treatments because that would violate their religious freedom on one hand and then reconcile that with an assertion that those same health care providers and researchers are not really part and parcel of the same organization under criminal investigation on the other hand?

Just more smoke and mirrors; had they told the truth in the beginning they would not be in this mess that they themselves created Zero credility for me and many others, I am sure.
