PUBLICLY ACCUSED FRESNO ABUSIVE PRIESTS ‘UNDER THE RADAR’ (5/9)

--Fr. John R. Shepherd, who was a Jesuit and who worked in Arizona and spent time in at least five California towns: Los Angeles, San Jose, Los Altos and Azusa. In 1954-1955, he was at Ryan Preparatory Junior Seminary in Fresno.

--Fr. James Cairns was a Vincentian priest and has been accused of sexually abusing at least one child from approximately 1971 to 1973. Fr. Cairns was included in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ list of priests accused of sexual misconduct involving minors. It is believed Fr. Cairns may be living in Modesto, CA.

 Ordained in 1969, he spent time in San Fernando, Montebello, Camarillo and Los Angeles. He had four assignments in Fresno. From 1994-1998, he was at Saint Agnes’ Medical Center. From 1999-2000, he was at The Catholic Community of MountCarmel and St. Alphonsus parish. In 2001, he was at Children’s Hospital.

--Fr. Mario Cimmarrusti, who was accused of abusing at least 12 victims. He was sued for abuse in 2003 and named in a 2006 settlement involving St. Anthony's Seminary High School, the Santa Barbara Boys Choir and the Santa Barbara Mission. Fr. Cimmarrusti worked in the dioceses of Stockton and Fresno. His last known address was San Damiano Retreat House inDanville, California in the Oakland diocese. His name was included on the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ 2004 list of priests accused of sexual misconduct involving minors.

Ordained in 1957, he spent time in Missouri, Arizona, Oregon, Minnesota and at least three California towns: Santa Barbara,Stockton and Delano.

--Fr. Stuart B. Campbell, who spent time in seven California towns (East Highland, Del Rosa, Porterville, San Bernardino, Duarte, Porterville, and Santa Ana) and 13 Nevada towns (Beatty, Verdi, Reno, East Line, Battle Mountain, Carson City, Fernley-Empire, Tonopah, Dayton, Virginia City, and Las Vegas). He also worked in Ohio, Illinois New York Kentucky and Washington, D.C.

Fr. Campbell was named in a 2003 lawsuit as having sexually abused a child between 1956-1959, while he worked in the Monterey-Fresno diocese. Campbell He was ordained a Dominican priest.

His name appears on the ‘credibly accused’ lists put out by the Dominicans, the Reno diocese and the Las Vegas diocese.

--Br. Joseph (Jesse) Gutierrez-Cervantes, who worked in the Philippines, Texas and at least four California towns, includingConcord, Moraga and Berkeley. From 1981-1984, he was at St. Anthony Claret in Fresno.

After allegedly leaving the order in the mid-1980s, he obtained a job as a contract psychologist at Hanna Boys’ Center inSonoma. He was fired after sexual misconduct allegations surfaced. Br. Gutierrez-Cervantes’ victims said that they were sexually abused during therapy sessions. Br. Gutierrez was named in a civil lawsuit in 2003.

He was last known to have a communication consulting company in Sonoma and was known as Jesse Gutierrez-Cervantes.
