Statement by David Clohessy of St. Louis, Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (314 566 9790314 645 5915 home, [email protected])

We’re thrilled for Andrea Constand and all victims of sexual violence, many of whom will no doubt feel some sense of relief and vindication at a decision today in the Bill Cosby case. A judge ruled that a 2005 deposition in which  Cosby “admits to extramarital affairs and giving other women drugs with their consent so they'd have sex with him can be used by attorneys in a criminal case against him,” according to CNN.

Thousands of predators have exploited legal technicalities and maneuvers to suppress evidence against themselves. We’re grateful this one offender no longer can.

Still, sex cases are notoriously tough to win and Cosby can afford a boatload of expensive lawyers. So this is no time to be complacent. Others with information or suspicions about the comedian’s wrongdoing – or wrongdoing by others in his entourage or employ – must still find the courage to come forward.

No matter what Cosby or courts do or don’t do, we urge every single person who saw, suspected or suffered sex crimes and cover ups – especially by powerful figures – to protect others by calling police, get help by calling therapists, expose wrongdoers by calling attorneys, and be comforted by calling support groups like ours. This is how the vulnerable will be safer, adults will recover, criminals will be prosecuted, cover ups will be deterred and the truth will surface.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. SNAP was founded in 1988 and has more than 20,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. Our website is SNAPnetwork.org)
