Statement by David Clohessy of St. Louis, Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, 314 566 9790, [email protected], [email protected]

We commend Sue Paterno for funding an abuse program in Pennsylvania universities. We urge others in the Penn State community to follow her lead and donate to efforts that help prevent and detect child sex crimes.

We especially challenge those pushing for a new Joe Paterno statue and Penn State board members (like Robert Jubelirer) to individually step up and take positive and generous moves to improve children’s safety, and focus less on honoring a now-deceased coach or restoring the university’s reputation. Teaching people how to spot and stop heinous crimes against kids is much more productive than rehashing the past.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We were founded in 1988 and have more than 20,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers.
