PA -- Victims blast Penn State over frat photos

For immediate release: Tuesday, March 17

Statement by David Clohessy of St. Louis, Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, 314 566 9790, [email protected]

For years now, Penn State enthusiasts have repeatedly reassured everyone who’d listen that the university’s problematic culture about sex crimes had been “reformed.” The latest allegations – that a fraternity members posted nude pictures of women on Facebook, some of whom appeared to be sleeping or passed out – raise serious doubts about those claims.

Instead of minimizing Jerry Sandusky’s crimes, Joe Paterno’s complicity and the school’s unhealthy climate around sex offenses, Penn State’s hierarchy should be taking effective steps to reverse the predator-friendly atmosphere at the university. And they should have started this years ago. The Kappa Delta Rho is a wake up call. But the Sandusky case should have been a wake up call too.

We hope officials, at the university and in law enforcement, come down like a ton of bricks on these callous young men who took and posted these photos. And we hope that Penn State officials will stop patting themselves on the back and start instituting real reforms to make the campus safer for students.

(SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, is the world’s oldest and largest support group for clergy abuse victims. We were founded in 1988 and have more than 20,000 members. Despite the word “priest” in our title, we have members who were molested by religious figures of all denominations, including nuns, rabbis, bishops, and Protestant ministers. No question the fraternity members responsible for this deserve everything coming to them. But the statement questioning Penn State’s commitment to cultural reform is nothing more than a opportunistic, baseless attention grab from an organization dedicated more to self-promotion than to effecting real change.
